About the Adventist Media Centre

studio october 09The Adventist Media Centre (UK), or AMC-UK, is located at the office of the British Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in Watford, and has been producing video resources for the Seventh-day Adventist Church since 1995. The Centre provides media resorces for the Adventist church including interviews, documentary programmes, promotional videos and various reports for special events.

One of the primary functions of the Media Centre is to produce programmes for the Hope Channel, which is the Adventist Church's international 24-hour satellite television station. Currently the Media Centre is producing a weekly half-hour interview programme entitled "In Conversation" and is working on a new project, "Seeds".

AMC-UK is also the body through which other Adventist entities, churches, organisations, groups or individuals within the UK and Ireland must submit programmes for possible broadcast on the Hope Channel satellite or website. The British Union Conference provides funding for the running of the Hope Channel's satellite services in Europe but does not provide any funding to entities (apart from AMC-UK) for the commissioning of programmes, purchasing of equipment, or other production expenses.

Submission of Programmes for Broadcast on the Hope Channel

control roomAMC-UK will consider completed programmes for broadcast and, if these are acceptable in terms of quality and content, will pay for the programmes to be converted from PAL to NTSC and will send them on to the Hope Channel for inclusion in the programme schedule for Hope Channel Europe. Programmes submitted for inclusion should:

  • be between 28 and 29, or 58 and 59, minutes in length, in order to fit into the Hope Channel's programme structure.
  • convey Adventist values in keeping with the policies of the General Conference.
  • be produced in such as way as to provide interest and relevance to a secular audience, where possible.
  • be submitted to AMC-UK in either MiniDV, DVCAM, or BetaSP tape format. Other tape formats and DVD disks will not be accepted.
  • be complete and in final edited form, with appropriate credits, date, and copyright notice.

Additional notes:

  • Tapes will not be returned to the sender and copies may be kept by the Media Centre for archiving purposes.
  • Material is accepted on the understanding that the producer has given permission for the programme to be broadcast on any of the Hope Channels, at such times, and for as many times, as the Hope Channel shall decide.
  • Producers must ensure that any programmes they submit to AMC-UK are in compliance with the law in relation to copyright, and that any release documents required have been obtained. This is particuarly importnat in connetion with music. The strong recommendation is that only original music that is either public domain or is your own copyright be used in programmes. Please contact AMC-UK if you need guidence in this area.

Funding of Programme Production

Wes on locationAs stated above AMC-UK does not provide any funding to producers. Potential producers should therefore either fund projects themselves or seek funding from alternative sources. Funding may be available from Conference or Mission sources or, in certain cases, from evangelistic budgets. Areas or local churches may also be willing to use their funds to support worthwhile production projects.

In all cases broad support should be sought and approval gained from the funding bodies before a project is embarked upon. It would also be prudent to liaise with AMC-UK in order to ascertain whether or not a particular programme will be suitable for the Hope Channel.

Even if AMC-UK has given tentative approval for a project, it reserves the right to refuse to pass on the final product to the Hope Channel if it feels that the production has not met the required standards in terms of quality or content.

The final decision as to what is broadcast is of course down to the Hope Channel itself. Even if material is approved and recommended by AMC-UK it is no guarantee that it will be shown.

LIFEdevelopment Training Video. This 15-minute programme combines matchstick animations with real live footage from LIFEdevelopment events and is aimed at a young audience. It is filmed in DVD quality but has been compressed in DivX format and saved as an 83Mb avi file. You can then play it from your computer in Windows Media Player and it will look just about as good as the original DVD. If you don't already have it you will need to intstall the DivX codec on your computer. You can easily download it from www.divx.com.
